Filoli Historic House & Garden

The Filoli estate was originally part of the Rancho San Francisco Mexican land grant. In 1917, Mr. William Bowers Bourn II and his wife Florence bought the property and commissioned architect Willis Polk to design the present day Georgian Revival style mansion. The Bournes were avid art collectors and filled the house with furniture, paintings, and objets d’art from their travels.

After Mr. Bourn’s death in 1936, Filoli was inherited by his son, Ned. In 1937, Ned married Lillian Goldman, daughter of the renowned San Francisco investment banker Levi Strauss. The Goldmans made Filoli their year-round residence and continued to add to the house and garden collections.
